Collections
Leopold Museum, Vienna
Featuring 43 oil paintings and over 200 watercolors, drawings and printed graphic works by Egon Schiele, the Leopold Museum houses the world’s largest and most eminent collection of works by the artist. The collection, compiled by the collector Professor Rudolf Leopold (1925–2010), with the support of his wife Elisabeth Leopold (1926–2024), further comprises an extensive compilation of around 500 autographs, numerous photographs and miscellanea. These include sketchbooks, calligraphic poems, a letter containing aphorisms written by the artist to his uncle Leopold Czihaczek, and even a lock of Edith Schiele’s hair. Historical catalogues of exhibitions Schiele participated in are continuously added to the Leopold Museum’s archives. On the basis of estates, such as that of Anton Peschka jun., which was given to the Wien Museum, written notes and references in the correspondence, as well as historical photographs, we are currently in the process of reconstructing Schiele’s private library.
The Leopold Museum-Privatstiftung would like to thank all institutions and individuals who have contributed to the compilation of the EGON SCHIELE AUTOGRAPH DATABASE (ESDA) for their generous cooperation and kind support.
Museums, Archives and Libraries with Particularly Extensive Autograph Collections
Albertina, Vienna
Along with around 200 watercolors and drawings by Egon Schiele, the Albertina is also home to the Egon Schiele Archive (ESA) founded by Max Wagner (1882–1954). After Wagner’s death, the archive was bequeathed to the Albertina, where the holdings of Christian M. Nebehay (1909–2003) were sorted and published in 1979 in a publication titled Egon Schiele 1890-1918. Leben, Briefe, Gedichte. Thanks to continuous donations by other individuals, the archive now comprises some 1,450 objects, including letters from and to Egon Schiele, biographical documents, sketchbooks, notebooks and diaries, as well as photographs, newspaper cuttings and exhibition catalogues.
Kallir Research Institute, New York
The Kallir Research Institute emerged from of the Galerie St. Etienne founded by Otto Kallir (1894–1978). The catalogue raisonné of Schiele’s complete works published by Jane Kallir, Egon Schiele: The Complete Works (New York 1990/1998), is considered the standard work of Schiele research. In 2018, the catalogue raisonné was made accessible online. The KRI further houses a large number of autographs from, to and about Egon Schiele.
Klimt-Foundation, Vienna
The collection of the Klimt Foundation features more than 70 letters from and to Egon Schiele. The focus is on the correspondence between the artist and Erich Lederer (1896–1985), the son of the married couple Serena (1867–1943) and August Lederer (1857–1936). Both compiled one of the most eminent collections of works by Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), while they also promoted Klimt’s friend and fellow artist Egon Schiele, who was almost three decades younger.
Kunsthaus Zürich
Together with artists’ letters, the Kunsthaus Zürich also holds nearly all the administrative acts from the term of its first director Wilhelm Wartmann (1882–1970). Autographs from Egon Schiele and Galerie Arnot, letterpress copybooks documenting the outbound correspondence of the Zurich Art Society, as well as log books kept by the exhibition committee, allow us to fully retrace the planning of exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna
The Austrian National Library’s Department of Manuscripts and Old Prints houses the correspondence between Egon Schiele and the architect Moritz Otto Kuntschik (1874–1933), who rented Schiele his studio at Hietzinger Hauptstraße 101.
Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck
Since 1953, the Ferdinandeum has been in possession of numerous autographs and archival material from Egon Schiele’s correspondence with the art dealer Guido Arnot (1876–1946), the bulk of which relates to the preparation of the collective exhibition held in 1915 at Galerie Arnot.
Wienbibliothek im Rathaus, Vienna
The Wienbibliothek’s Manuscript Collection is the custodian of an extensive collection, comprising some 200 documents, of correspondence by Egon Schiele, especially with the art critic Arthur Roessler (1877–1955) and the collector Heinrich Benesch (1862–1947), which further includes one of the artist’s sketchbooks.
