About us

The EGON SCHIELE AUTOGRAPH DATABASE (ESDA) is a research platform dedicated to Egon Schiele (1890–1918), a chief exponent of Austrian Expressionism. The ESDA was compiled from 2008–2010 at the commissioned by of the former Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (present-day Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport). It was conceived by the Leopold Museum-Privatstiftung, and is subject to continuous maintenance and expansion.

The aim of the ESDA is to gather all known and newly discovered autographs from, to and about Egon Schiele, as well as miscellanea relating to the artist from Austrian and international collections, in one database. The basis for this endeavor is provided by the publications by the art critic Arthur Roessler (1877–1955) – Briefe und Prosa von Egon Schiele (Vienna 1921), and by the art dealer, collector and author Christian M. Nebehay (1909–2003) – Egon Schiele 18901918. Leben, Briefe, Gedichte (Salzburg/Vienna 1979).

The database currently comprises around 2,940 data sets from institutional and private collections. Along with the artist’s correspondence, it also features poems, diary entries and biographical documents by Egon Schiele. In addition to illustrations and transcriptions, the database offers technical details of the archival material, as well as further explanations and information. The ESDA also takes into account some of Schiele’s paintings, limited to those works that are mentioned or appear to be mentioned in the correspondence.
Along with a detailed Schiele biography, the ESDA further provides a comprehensive bibliography on the artist as well as an exhibition history.

Since the ESDA’s fundamental remastering in 2024, users are no longer required to register and sign in. We continue to work on extending the research platform.
Content-related links between individual autographs, as well as links between autographs and mentioned people and institutions, paintings and exhibitions are continuously added, as are English translations of the transcriptions.
